The Last Week Before the SAT: A Seven-Day Plan Without Last-Minute Overload

In the last week before the SAT, review familiar mistakes, rehearse your timing decisions, complete the required Bluebook setup and settle your test-day logistics. Keep the workload manageable. You do not need to fit another full practice test into the week simply because the exam is approaching.

The plan below is an original coaching framework, not a proven formula for raising a score. Adjust the practice workload to your preparation and schedule. Its logistical steps focus on SAT Weekend; students taking SAT School Day should follow their school’s readiness instructions.

Give each day one useful finish line

Count backward from your actual test date. These seven days end on the day before the exam.

Seven-day plan before the SAT
Time before the test Main focus Finish with
Seven days Choose review priorities Two recurring errors to address
Six days Repair one familiar weak area A short note explaining the correct approach
Five days Complete SAT Weekend exam setup An accessible admission ticket
Four days Rehearse timing decisions A plan for questions that slow you down
Three days Revisit selected mistakes A few independently solved examples
Two days Confirm travel and materials A checked bag and arrival plan
One day Light review and a final logistics check A clear stopping point for studying

If a required task is unfinished, handle it when you notice it. The table is a way to organize the week, not a reason to postpone getting help with a device or identification problem.

Seven and six days before: narrow the review

Look at recent practice rather than starting a new curriculum. Select two patterns that show up repeatedly. Include correct answers you were unsure about: guessing correctly does not necessarily mean you can explain the method.

For example, a hypothetical student, Mina, notices that she solves algebra correctly but sometimes submits the value of x when the question asks for 2x + 1. Her review task is to solve a small set of familiar problems and underline the requested quantity before calculating. “Be more careful” becomes an action she can rehearse.

Choose similarly specific responses for Reading and Writing. If you miss transitions, explain the relationship between the ideas before comparing choices. If a punctuation rule is unclear, review that rule and use a few examples to check your understanding.

End each session by writing what you will do differently on the next similar question. If the explanation still does not make sense, ask a teacher or tutor rather than memorizing a solution you cannot reproduce.

Five days before: complete Bluebook exam setup

For SAT Weekend, exam setup becomes available five days before testing. Use the device you will test on, sign in, complete setup and make your admission ticket accessible. Check that your personal information matches your identification. College Board’s personal-device preparation guide.

Device preparation should start earlier: College Board advises beginning at least 30 days ahead. If you discover a compatibility issue now, seek help promptly instead of assuming a late replacement will work. Students approved to borrow a College Board device complete setup on that device at the center and must arrive 30 minutes early to sign in and set up. For SAT School Day, the school typically organizes a readiness check using sign-in tickets. Ask your coordinator about your own setup process. College Board’s SAT School Day guide.

Four and three days before: rehearse decisions, then revisit errors

Use a manageable timed set to check how you respond when a question takes longer than expected. Practice marking it for review, moving forward and returning while the module remains open. On the SAT, you can review within a module until its time expires, but you cannot return after leaving it. College Board’s test-day explanation.

Avoid inventing a strict per-question limit you have never practiced. Your goal is to notice when you are repeating an unproductive approach and make a deliberate next move.

The following day, revisit selected errors without viewing the earlier answer. Explain why your current approach works. A short successful check can close a review task; you do not need to keep adding questions to make the session feel substantial.

Two days before: make the morning concrete

Confirm the address and arrival time on your admission ticket, plan transportation and identify a backup route. Check official messages for center changes. Use your ticket’s instructions rather than treating a sample schedule as universal. College Board’s test-day procedures.

Check your materials against the current official list: a fully charged testing device with setup completed, your admission ticket, acceptable physical photo ID, pens or pencils, and your account credentials. Include a charging cable and any permitted items you plan to use. A calculator is built into Bluebook; if bringing your own, check that it is acceptable. What to bring on SAT test day.

Pack deliberately rather than relying on remembering everything while rushing out the door.

One day before and test morning: keep it familiar

Read your short review notes, do a few familiar questions if useful, and choose a stopping time. Keep ordinary meals and a sensible sleep routine. Avoid turning the evening into a new training program or trying unfamiliar routines for the first time.

On test morning, follow College Board’s final device check: connect to the internet, close and reopen Bluebook, sign in and check messages. Bring the charged device and follow your arrival instructions. College Board’s final device checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Should I take a full practice SAT in the last week?

Only if it answers a useful question and leaves time to review. If you already understand your priorities, focused work may be a more manageable choice. Another full test is not a requirement of this plan.

Can I complete exam setup the night before?

It is available in the five days before SAT Weekend. Completing it earlier gives you time to address problems; check your own instructions, particularly for a borrowed device. College Board’s setup guidance.

What if I still have major weak areas?

Choose a few familiar, actionable priorities and finish the required logistics. A week does not guarantee time to rebuild every skill. Keep the plan realistic and carry any longer-term preparation needs into your next steps after the test.
